Education is one of the basic activities in all human societies. The word education is derived from the Latin word educate which means to bring up and is connected with the verb educate which means to bring forth.
“AN INVESTMENT IN KNOWLEDGE PAYS THE BEST INTEREST”
By Benjamin Franklin.
Plato held that the aim of education was to develop in the body and in the soul of the pupils all the perfection and all the beauty of which they are capable. According to Aristotle, to educate meant to develop mans faculties, especially his mind so that they may be able to enjoy the contemplation of supreme truth, beauty and goodness.
Sumner defined education as the attempt to induce in the children the ethics and principles, so that they can learn, what conduct is approved and what is disapproved, how they ought to behave in all kinds of situations, what they ought to believe in and reject. According to F.J. Brown and J.S. Roucek, education is the sum total of the experience which molds the altitudes and determines the conduct of both the child and the adult. According to Anderson Education is the social process by which an individual learns the things necessary to fit him to the life of his society. Durkheim conceived of education as the socialization of the younger generation. It is actually, he stated, a continuous effort to impose on the child ways of seeing, feeling and acting which he could not have arrived at spontaneously. It thus can be considered as a process of transmission of social heritage. A process whereby the social heritage of a group is passed on from one generation to another and whereby the child learns the rules of social behavior. It is a conscious training of the young for the later adoption of adult roles.
Thus, education can mean different things to different people, but the significant essence of education remains the same i.e., the general overall well-being of people.
Education is the most important factor for the development of human civilization. But the question is how through education we can merely achieve all these things, how can we develop? Education provides the nation with man powers, promotes national unity and uplifts public awareness. A country needs different kinds of man powers such as doctors, engineers, teachers, administrative officials, economists, judges and other technical hands. Education provides the nation with those educated hands. If people are educated, they can understand their duties and rights. In order to uplift human society, each should be capable to understand others. If people can understand each other, they will be united. Thus, education can promote national unity. In other to uplift the degree of awareness of the society, education plays a prime role. It makes all people conscious.
Thus Educated people can reform society. They can understand what is wrong and what is right. They can save good traditions as to achieve d true sense of liberalization we need to change the bad and retain the good. And it is only education as described by sumner which endows us with this basic sense of identification, understanding, differentiating and judging. In this way, education profoundly enhances human prosperity. It is synonymous with socialization. It is an attempt to shape the development of the coming generation in accordance with the social ideas of life.
